    This is a translation for your convenience. If the English and the Japanese differ, the Japanese version prevails.

    So that everyone stays safely and comfortably, we set out the following house rules under Article 8 of our terms of accommodation. If they are not kept, we may have to refuse your stay or the use of our facilities, and ask you to take responsibility.

    The basics of your stay

    1. Check-in is from 15:00 to 21:00, and check-out is by 10:00.
    2. For safety reasons (private baths open around the clock, a wood stove, steps up to the lofts, and a timber building that carries sound), we do not accept guests under 12 years of age. We do not accept guests under 18 staying without a parent or guardian unless a guardian has consented.
    3. We do not accept pets.
    4. This is a small house of eight rooms. Please be considerate of other guests.
    5. Parking is free (8 spaces for standard cars).
    6. Shoes are not worn inside. Please change into the slippers at the entrance.

    Fire prevention

    1. Please do not use cooking equipment in the rooms, other than what is provided.
    2. The whole property, indoors and out, is non-smoking except in the designated area. If smoking is found elsewhere, we will charge the actual cost of deodorising and restoring the room (as a guide: professional deodorising from JPY 40,000, plus the room rate for each night the room cannot be sold).
    3. Please do not use fireworks, incense, candles or anything else that could start a fire.
    4. The wood stove in the lounge is looked after by our staff. Please do not add wood or handle the fire yourself.
    5. Charge devices with lithium-ion batteries (power banks, e-cigarettes, cameras and the like) only on a hard, non-flammable surface, and never on or near bedding, sofas, carpets, clothing or other flammable items. If we notice unusual heat, smell or swelling while a device is charging, staff may enter the room and stop the charging for safety.
    6. Charging or using a device whose battery is swollen, smells or is unusually hot is very dangerous. Please stop at once and tell a member of staff.
    7. Please do not charge devices while you sleep or while you are out. If we find a device charging while you are out, we may stop it.
    8. If we judge a device to be a fire risk, we may ask you to disconnect it or stop using it.

    Using the private baths

    1. The private baths (Haru, Natsu, Aki and Huyu) are open 24 hours and need no reservation.
    2. Each bath is for one party at a time. Please use the sign at the door to show it is in use, and do not occupy a bath for a long time.
    3. There are no towels in the bathing rooms. Please bring the towels from your room. A yukata is provided in the room.
    4. Please do not bathe after drinking, when you are unwell, or if you have a condition that makes bathing unwise.
    5. Kusatsu's water is strongly acidic. Avoid long soaks, and we recommend rinsing with fresh water afterwards.

    Using the sauna (Base Sauna)

    1. The sauna can be used from 15:00, after check-in, until 22:00. It costs JPY 2,000 for 50 minutes (for up to two guests; from the third guest, JPY 500 per person is added). To book, let us know your preferred time in advance, or ask at the front desk at or after check-in.
    2. It is entirely private, for up to three people.
    3. Please do not use the sauna after drinking, when you are unwell, or if you have a medical condition. If in doubt, ask your doctor.
    4. Drink water often. Do not force the cold bath; enter it once your breathing has settled.
    5. For löyly, please use only the water provided in the sauna room.
    6. Each sauna guest receives one bath towel and one bottle of water (500 ml). We hand you the sauna key when you use it; afterwards, please return the towels together with the key to the front desk. There are no towels in the private baths, so please bring the towels from your room for those.

    Keeping the house quiet

    1. The house is built of timber, with solid wood throughout. The walls, floors and doors are insulated for sound, but it does not have the complete soundproofing of a concrete building.
    2. Please be mindful of how loud you speak at night. After 21:00, please refrain from conversation in shared areas such as the wooden deck, corridors and lounge.
    3. This is a timber house in the highlands, and insects can appear, especially in summer. Please use the insect spray provided.

    Security

    1. Please make sure your door is locked whenever you leave your room.
    2. Please use the inside lock while you are in the room and while you sleep.
    3. Please do not receive visitors in your room.

    Payment

    1. Bookings made on our official website are paid in advance by the registered credit card. The bathing tax (JPY 150 per person per night) is paid at check-in.
    2. Please pay for drinks and other things you use in the house at the time of use.
    3. We cannot exchange currency.
    4. We cannot advance money for tickets, taxis, luggage shipping and the like.

    What we ask you not to do

    1. Please do not bring into the house anything that would trouble other guests:
      • dogs, cats, birds or other animals
      • explosives, volatile fuels or other dangerous goods
      • anything that gives off a strong smell
      • unlicensed firearms or swords, or anything else prohibited by law
      • unusually large quantities of goods
    2. Please do not gamble, behave in a way that disturbs public order or morals, or make noise (loud voices, singing, playing instruments) that troubles or offends other guests.
    3. Rooms may be used only by registered guests.
    4. Please do not use the rooms or shared areas for business, as an office, or for any purpose other than your stay.
    5. Please do not distribute or post advertising, or sell goods, in the house.
    6. Please do not use the facilities or fittings for other than their intended purpose, or move or alter them.
    7. Please do not take photographs for commercial purposes, or in a way that troubles other guests, without permission.
    8. Please do not hang or display anything in the windows that would spoil the look of the building.
    9. Please do not leave belongings in corridors or shared areas.
    10. Except in an emergency, please do not enter areas not meant for guests: emergency stairs, storerooms, machine rooms, staff corridors.
    11. If the building, fittings or other property are damaged, soiled or lost for reasons other than force majeure, we may ask you to pay an appropriate amount.
